Londyn is an Americanized respelling of London. The name given in London is basically the use of a surname derived from a place name, which of course we call London, England. An ancient city, the etymology of the name can be traced back to the 2nd century.
The name is thought to originate from an ancient Indo-European word (p) lowonida, which indicates a 'river too'. width to cross (cross) probably alludes to the River Thames flowing through London.
When the ancient Celtic people (Brythonic) developed this area, the settlement was called (Low Lowididjonjon (drop the original). The Latin “Londinium” was also recorded by the Roman historian, Tacitus, during the Roman occupation in the early 2nd century.
In the Middle Ages, the surname was probably given (for identification purposes) to those who left the city of London and settled elsewhere, or else a person who visited the city and returned to their village with some remarkable account of their experience (hence, another identifier).
The name is said to originate from the Celtic element "lond" meaning ‘wild or bold. London as a certain name is distinct from the United States; Other English speaking countries don't seem to be using it. The respelling of Londyn was probably developed in an attempt to further feminize the name.
