Move over, Brooklyn. If you haven't noticed, Queens is quickly becoming the new it borough (it was recently called one of the most popular travel destinations in the country!).
Neighborhoods like Astoria, Long Island City and Forest Hills are favorites with families, and, thanks to the borough's ethnic diversity, you can enjoy some of the best Greek, Chinese and Latin food in the city. Add in amazing waterfront views, top-notch museums and the Mets, and it's easy to see why you should start planning a day trip to the city's easternmost borough. Read on for 25 fun things to do in Queens with kids.
1.Greek food
Indulge in some Greek food in Astoria. Try the Greek salad or octopus at Taverna Kyclyades, or the grandma's Greek meatballs—served with warm pita and tzatziki sauce—at MP Taverna (they even has high chairs for their high bar tables!).
2. Flushing's Chinatown
Walk down the streets of Flushing's Chinatown. Treats from the dumpling carts or the sticky bun cafes are perfect for kids. Don't miss The Golden Mall, a basement-style food market that's full of delicacies you'll only find in Asia.
3. Queens County Farm Museum
Escape city life at the Queens County Farm Museum. Kids can get up close and personal with sheep, pigs and egg-laying hens. Seasonal favorites include the Children's Carnival in the spring and the Maize Maze in the fall.
4. Astoria Park
Spend the afternoon at Astoria Park—the beautiful green space runs along the water and under the Triborough Bridge. You'll find a playground, basketball court and, come summer, the city's largest outdoor swimming pool.
5. Jackson Heights
Try Latin food—think Mexican street tacos and Colombian empanadas—in Jackson Heights. You'll also find the original Peruvian rotisserie chicken spot Pio Pio. Make a reservation, it books up fast!
6. Beer Garden at Bohemian Hall
Hang out at the Beer Garden at Bohemian Hall in Astoria. The enclosed spot is filled with families on weekend afternoons—taste Czech food (don't worry, there's chicken nuggets and burgers for the kids!), have a beer and listen to music.
7. Vintage carousel
Take a spin on a vintage carousel. Queens is home to two—one in Fantasy Forest inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park, and the other, Forest Park Carousel, inside Forest Park.
8. Citi Field for a Mets game
Bring the kids to Citi Field for a Mets game. We love Family Sundays—kids can run the bases with Mr. Met after every home game.
9. Bareburger
Chow down on an organic burger (and some fries!) at the original Bareburger on 31st Avenue in Astoria. They even have a healthy, but yummy, menu for the kiddos.
10. Long Island City
Take in the views from Long Island City's Gantry Plaza State Park. The park is also home to three climbing structures and a splash park. (It's also where you'll find the iconic Pepsi Cola sign!)
