1. Mirador del Valle (Classic viewpoint)
No visit to Toledo is complete without enjoying the breathtaking views of the city from the other side of the Tagus river. If you have a lot of time, you can walk from Puente de San Martín or Puente de Alcántara, but it might be better to hop on one of the tourist trains and take a round trip. If you are visiting a day trip from Madrid by bus, most travel companies will stop at the observation point before you enter the city.
Take the first thing in the morning and start your tour here, as the sun will be behind Toledo in the evening, which is not really ideal for photography.
2. Toledo Cathedral
The Toledo Cathedral, or rather the Catedral Primada Santa maría de Toledo, is a Gothic architectural masterpiece dating back to the 13th century. Of the many churches in Toledo, the Church is by far the most impressive. Not only does it have its absolute size, golden splendor, beautiful stained glass windows and intricate constructions, it is also a fairly special layout of the church. Many different chapels and a huge golden picture can form a beautiful collection of rich history, almost incomprehensible.
3. Alcázar of Toledo
Where else would you find a more stone fortress in the highest part of the city? Alcázar of Toledo dates back to Roman times and played an important role in the Spanish Civil War starting in 1936. Today, it houses the Military Museum, you might want to see if you have a lot of time in Toledo.
4. Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes
One of my favorite places in Toledo is the San Juan de los Reyes Monastery. I simply love the church with the little garden built in the style called Isabelline. It is just a quiet space full of tranquility. The terrace in front of the monastery is also a good view point. Definitely put it on a to-do list in Toledo
5. Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca
Like I said, Toledo is often referred to as the city of three cultures. Therefore, you should definitely put your access to one of the many synagogues on the to-do list in Toledo. The most beautiful, and by far the oldest, is the synagogue of Santa María la Blanca. This is the third most visited historical site in Toledo and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places. It's a museum - no rituals are held here anymore.
6. El Greco Museum, Toledo
And talk about El Greco. The artist was born on Crete but spent the last years of his life in Toledo. Perhaps not surprisingly, Toledo has an entire museum dedicated to El Greco - a place you really shouldn't miss. Here, link to the Museum's official website.
7. Castle of San Servando
Not far from the Puente de Alcántara hides one of the hidden gems of Toledo. The castle of San Servando is a medieval monastery later fortified and occupied by the Knights Templar. It’s quite the enchanting little escape and has been named a national monument. Not one of the must-sees, but certainly charming and a great place to end your walking tour through Toledo.
8. Iglesia de San Ildefonso, Toledo
The best views of the old town Deleto can be enjoyed from the towers of Iglesia de San Idelfonso. You will find the entrance to the bell tower on the left side of the side aisle. The towers are not very tall, but there are no elevators. This church is very beautiful, in almost every European church way, but on the other hand is not noticeable.
9. Iglesia de Santiago del Arrabal
Another beautiful mosque that has been turned into a church is called Iglesia de Santigo del Arrabal. The building dates back to around 1245 AD and retains many of the original details of the so-called Mudéjar architectural style is famous for.
10. Festivals in Toledo, Spain
The origin of Corpus Christi can be traced back to the 15th century. The highlight of the festival is when the great Monstrance of Arfe will be carried through the streets, lined up by thousands of spectators. If you can, plan your trip to Toledo in May.
