1. Meaning of the name "Sienna"
Although Sienna is often associated with orange-red color, it is actually an Italian name from the town of Tuscany with the same name. Siena, Italy is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Italy and it attracts a lot of tourists and visitors each year.
This name was often not given to the baby until 1900 in Italy and around the world. The name Sienna may mean an orange-red or an alternate meaning is subtle.
The traditional spelling of the female name Sienna is with two Ns, although the town is named after only one n. Some names similar to Sienna are Sierra (or Cierra), Savannah, Serena or Selena. Common misspellings of Sienna's name are Siena, Cienna or Ciena.
Sienna wasn't always a common name, rarely used before the 1980s. When American-American actress Sienna Miller started getting a clearer vision, the name started to come back.
The highest-ranking it has ever enjoyed was being the 9th most popular name in Australia and the 20th most popular in the UK in 2014. In the US the name has not enjoyed as much popularity with the highest-ranking ever being 170th most popular in 2007, but Sienna is a more common name in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
Fewer celebrities are known as Sienna, but the most notable ones are Sienna Miller, an English actor and Sienna Howell-Holden, an actress.
2. Siena
Siena is a place name located in central-northern Italy in the region of Tuscany.
According to medieval legends, this isolated old hill town was founded by Senio, the son of Remus (of the famous Romulus and Remus; that is, the legendary founders of Rome in the 8th century BC original).
This myth is celebrated with statues and other artistic renderings of a she-wolf and the twins repeated throughout the city. More likely, however, Siena was founded by ancient Etruscans many centuries BCE (the Etruscans are now extinct, long ago absorbed by the Latins);
They were known for establishing settlements in well-protected hill areas and, given their advanced irrigation systems, they were successful at it. In this case, the specific Etruscan tribe, Saina, would later make way for the Roman surname (Saenii) from the Latin Sen Sen Sen meaning the old way (from seneo how to become old).
In the first century AD, the Romans gain control of Siena and in the second century, the Via Cassia road was built from Rome to Florence with passage through Siena (positioning her on a vital trading route).
The Lombards came in the 6th century and by the 7th century, the Via Francigena was built (the road to France) which became an important link between Rome and France and a pilgrimage route for medieval Christians, once again elevating Siena’s location on the Western European map.
Although the Tuscan town of Siena is quite “old,” as a female personal name, Siena is rather new. Not-so-ironically it’s used more by English-speakers than Italians. In fact, it’s most popular in Australia.
