Here are the best cheap hotels in Melbourne!

1. Ibis Melbourne Swanston Street Hotel
This old Tune hotel is being kept in good condition. Very clean and very comfortable bed. The ac is quiet and efficient. I think the management is aware of the problem so I hope the improvement is close.
2. Mercure Welcome Melbourne
We stay here all the time coming to Melbourne every couple of weeks. Easy to drive to or to get public transport. Great location right next to Bourke St Shopping Center, Melbourne Central Shopping Mall, and China Town.
Beautiful room. Not super flash but clean tidy, comfortable and super affordable. The breakfast buffet is very good. The staff is super helpful and friendly.
3. ibis Melbourne Hotel and Apartments
We booked five nights for a short stay in Melbourne. We chose to pay an extra to get a higher floor but were disappointed because the view outside the window was about 15 meters to another building.
The room is very comfortable, quiet and spacious. The downstairs restaurant is great for a casual meal the first night we arrive and have breakfast another morning. The staff was very friendly but unable to assist with a better room with a view.
4. Ibis Melbourne Little Bourke Street
Our room was small but adequate and had everything that was required. The hotel was in a good position when we went to play tennis and 20/20 of cricket during our time in Melbourne.
Also close to the sky bus and near the South Cross railway station. The reception staff was always friendly and efficient. We had breakfast included and this could be described as average == unfortunately except for mornings when there was tinned apricots fruit was never very ripe also coffee machine made very frothy coffee.
5. Ibis Budget Melbourne CBD
This is a budget hotel as the name suggests, so don't expect 5 stars. However a great bargain for the price you pay. It was lovely to find a very clean 'budget' hotel, great location and great staff!
I stayed in room 409 and my friend stayed in 410 - both rooms were quaint and after a period of an adjustment getting used to the curtained small shower area, we both loved our rooms.
There was a bit of noise from the other occupants of the corridor early in the morning, hearing a knock on the door, but it was not the hotel's fault because there were signs of respect and tranquility in the hallway.
Beautiful clean sheets and towels and the rooms are spotless and made up each day. Yes do bring your own hairdryer and shampoo which is fine, however, tea and coffee are provided.
I would suggest to the Hotel that perhaps a few hooks could be provided for space to hang towels etc and the draws need attention as difficult/unable to open. To find the Hotel on Elizabeth street lookout for the IBIS sign above a small doorway which will lead you along the hallway to the lifts to access first-floor reception.
The location is perfect with a short walk to Flinders St station and free trams, and other nearby trams and coffee lanes on Collins Street and shopping in Bourke St. All the staff we handle (reception and housekeeping) are awesome !!
They were at all times efficient, professional in a warm friendly and helpful manner. Congratulations Ibis!!! Thanks to all the staff for your hard work and smiles. Will stay again.
6. The Sebel Melbourne Docklands
A nice funky place to stay for the Australian Open, handy for the free tram. Nice pool and tennis court and good service - call me to verify when my brother-in-law needs access. I would definitely stay here again.
7. BreakFree on Collins Melbourne
We had 3 nights at Break free on Collins which is very central to the main attractions and shopping precincts. The staff was very friendly and efficient at check-in and out. Our apartment was very comfortable, clean and spacious.
8. Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne
Pleasant staff, clean rooms, quality facilities that's what we wanted and that's what we received. Well done Adina on Queen. This is the most convenient place to stay in Melbourne, close to the city center, good transport options, and a safe locale.
9. Comfort Hotel East Melbourne
I won't forget this experience. I arrive on a humid day. As soon as I registered, I picked up the computer and it slipped from my hand (heavy metal pile) and landed on my feet. Oh! I turned around and the pain of Blood seeped onto the floor.
I screamed but the hotel Manager remained calm, honestly, she was great, she got straight to first AID and made a great tournament tying it up to stop the bleeding. In a few seconds, she called the ambulance to come but made me sit down.
I saw a lot of blood and mumbled, I'm sorry. However, she remained calm and called the janitor to clean. The husband came in and assisted too. Well with her quick fast first aid the bleeding had stopped within 10 mins.
I was taken to the hospital and discharged later that night. If it not had been for her quick fast action, I was close to a severed nerve. I arrived back late and Comfort, she had put the computer up in my room and other luggage, I will never forget the care and professional service of this comfort motel.
Beds were comfortable and spa baths were relaxing.
10. Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne
Stay at the Grand Chancellor when we are attending the Harry Potter play and it is near the theater. It is a great location and reasonably priced. We stayed in a refurbished room.
The bathroom has certainly been updated but the rest of the room still looks tired.
The entrance and general appearance of the hotel just looks a bit dirty or 'very well-loved'. The staff was very friendly. We found in one of the booklets in the room a 'two for one' offer for breakfast.
However, this is never provided to us when we book. We were just told the price of breakfast per person. There was road construction happening outside our window so didn't need an alarm to wake us up!!
